How much should it cost to install a trailer hitch on a 2006 Honda Pilot?
I have an '06 Honda Pilot that I recently purchased a trailer for to tow my motorcycle on. I was informed initially that the hitch and install would cost around $400 for Honda to install. Now that I have the trailer, they have told me it will cost $1800 as they need to install a special wiring harness along with power steering and transmission cooling units, as well as the hitch itself. I feel like they have really cheated me since i have spent $2000 on the trailer assuming the hitch would only be $400-$500. They are also saying that if I have someone else install these items it would be much cheaper, but then it would void my warranty. Thanks for help and suggestions.
If the car is 3 years old already, how much warranty do you have left?
I'm assuming you got this quote from the dealer. You could always go to an independent hitch place for the hitch and trailer wiring harness, and a transmission shop for the cooler. Those would be maybe $500 all told, I'd guess.
I'd be curious what extra cooling you need for the power steering system. Ask them for lots of details about that one. And an entire wiring harness? The difference so far is about $1300 for these last 2 items. Ask for LOTS of explanation about what these are. I think someone is either trying to sell you a trailering package at aftermarket prices, or equipping the car to tow a lot more than what you plan, or they're just late on their boat payment, and want you to make it this month.
