Pointers to follow when towing a trailer using your new Volvo
Using a trailer is not that hard, however if you are not used to the experience then it can be a little daunting. In most cases, drivers find the number one problem to be adjusting to the additional weight of the combination of car and trailer and finding a way to control them on the road.
So with this in mind, here are nine tips to remember to make sure you have a safer road trip in your Volvo and also feel more in control of your vehicle, as compiled by LeaseCar.co.uk.
1) Firstly, check the manual. Your caravan or trailer should have a manual or maybe just a safety label on the inside that will tell you what type of car you need to successfully tow your trailer. Then check your Volvo manual as you don't want to overload your Volvo's engine.
2) Next, check the trailer to see if it has a hitch package. This package is a facility to link your trailer electronics to the battery of the towing vehicle. It is essential to have this system as it powers the rear lights on your trailer or caravan, ensuring that other vehicles are aware that you are on the road.
3) Determine your viewing restrictions and limits, when the trailer is attached. This could involve extension gadgets that can fix to your side mirrors and allow you to have a better view of your trailer and also allow you to have a view of any vehicles that may be driving at the side or even behind you. A serious crash could not only ruin a holiday but could also cause some serious damage, so be careful.
4) Before you leave the house have a safety inspection. You should take this time to make sure all connections are tightened correctly. This should include: checking tyre pressure, checking that the hitch wiring is the required length to account for turns, connecting the stabilizer and equalizer, making sure the camper or trailer is balanced and adjust the trailer tongue so that it is in the correct position.
5) Secure everything before putting the key in the ignition. This is so important because you don't want to be driving along, get to your destination and then be surprised to find all your holiday gear is broken and in a thousand pieces.
6) When going down a hill ensure you don't go fast. Switch to a lower gear and then gently go down the hill, this is perhaps the only way to deal with inclines and declines in the road.
7) As you reverse you should not stress-out but instead take your time. During a steering manoeuvre the subtlest of moves on the wheel can damage the camper and completely destroy the tow bar.
Next, you should try and not make any sharp or abrupt turns. If it is possible you should change your driving style so that steering adjustments can be made ahead of time, this will ensure you remain safe during your trip.
9) Lastly, most Volvos should be find to tow a trailer but if you feel uncomfortable then you should think about leasing or hiring a more powerful Volvo instead. For example, I recently found a Volvo v70 leasing deal from LeaseCar.co.uk that was more appropriate for my road trip.
