What is the maximum by law I can trailer for a 2010 Toyota RAV4, 4 cylinder?
My car manual says the recommended maximum trailer is 1500 lbs with a maximum tongue weight of 150 lbs. I had a Class III hitch installed which is rated to 3500 lbs. As I understand it any trailer weight over 2000lbs requires trailer brakes. My RAV4 weighs around 3200 lbs. Can I legally and safely tow up to 2000 lbs or is the car manufacturer's recommendations law?
Go by the owner's manual. Do not exceed the maximum towing capacity of the vehicle as stated in the manual, regardless of what hitch you have. Anything more could damage the motor, transmission, suspension or the vehicle frame.
Chances are, by towing more than recommend you will exceed the GCWR, Gross Combined Weight Rating, and exceeding the GCWR is against the law in the US and I would imagine Canada.
