Do you think Christopher Hitchens expose of Mother Teresa is correct or was it character assassination ?
To Ellen J,
There are letters Mother Teresa has written on behalf of Savings and Loans swindler Charles Keating which Hitchens is able to show in his book. He has shown her efforts to get into political action in regards to abortion and birth control and how her hospitals are run are simply criminal. He is not the only critic of her to point this out. He actually substantiates his arguments with actual facts and has shown pictures of her charities and hospitals which are nothing more than places of religious conversion for the sick and dying. She has been in support of tyrants and swindling businessmen. "Unsubstantiated"? I don't think so.
I can't believe I didn't see this question originally. I've thought a lot about this issue.
I think he really brought out the truth about much of what Mother Teresa truly was about.
There is such mainsteam media laziness and groupthink. If someone brings out a truth that we aren't comfortable with, it gets attacked immediately by the supporters and virtually ignored by the media.
She thought that suffering was a virtue and was critical off all women who wanted to divorce, calling it an abomination. Yet, when Princess Diana was tramping around she was as supportive as possible of her divorce. I'm not critical of what people decide to do in their private life, but I am critical of hypocrisy. And this woman was about as hypocritical as you can get.
But as soon as she had the halo painted above her head, any amount of logic and reason wasn't going to change that perception. That would require an intellectual analysis and detached thought from the media. Can't have any of that!
Even though Hitchens is quite the drunk, he is a very intelligent man that is willing to go against group think. That is why I enjoy his work.
