How to add a hitch light to a 2000 cavalier?
I am building my own hitch cover for my car and am considering adding lights that will light up when I use my brakes. However, I do not know what wires to hook up to or what volts and amps are in the wires. Any extra details would also be helpful
There is no existing trailer lights, my hitch is homemade to haul a very light trailer up and down my driveway. So I will be cutting the wires inside the trunk, I just need to know which wires to cut.
keep it simple. if your cavalier trailer wiring is set up for a 4 prong flat trailer light plug, then buy an extra trailer side plug, and wire your hitch light to the plug. for best results use a dual filament tail light/brake light bulb and socket and wire the ground/brake light and tail light wires to the plug.
this will give you a full function hitch light that can easily be disconnected and removed. no additional wiring or splicing required in your existing vehicle.
(this is how the store bought lighted hitch plugs are set up)
Trailer Wiring Colors
•Brown wire to the tail or parking lights
•Green wire to right turn signal/stoplight
•Yellow wire to the left turn signal/stoplight
•White wire to common or chassis ground
