Wiring for small trailer from 7 wire to 4?
Please help,I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
The wire harness on the hitch has 7 wires,The whole thing is shot,My Question is can i just wire in a 4 prong harness, On my trailer yellow is left turn-green is right turn-brown is stop & tail,& white is ground The Jeep has 7 wires a green-a tan- a brown w green stripe-a blue w red stripe-a red w blue stripe and a bigger light blue and a bigger black, can i splice into these or do i have to get a converter of some sort ,Any idea's

Hello w2bag: There really is no mystery to the cars wiring system and the lighting part is the easiest. You don't need any books, service manuals, or any special tools. We are going to assume you have no access to any wiring data for your car and no special tools or test equipment. There is only a few things you have to do to be a pro. First, I think you made an error with your brown wire. This is not for the brake lights, it is to supply power to the parking lighs and the associated lights, if equiped i.e. side marker lights, license plate lights etc. The brake lights run through the turn signal switch. And no; you do not have to buy any special converter, the lighting system is all 12 volts. Go to your local auto parts store and pick up 7 moisture resistant splice taps. Tell them you want to tap into the lighting wiring harness and they will show you the correct size to use. They generally fit a range of different size wires, this makes it a little easier. You will also need some wire, the same gage(size) as the ones on your trailer. Color doesn't matter and as a rule, all wire sold in an auto parts store is rated for automotive use. If they sell it off a spool, just get about 6 feet. This is all you need for parts, and for tools, a simple wire cutter/stripper and a pair of plyers will do just fine. I'll assume you have some electrical tape or connectors that came with the trailer. If you don't know how to install the wire taps, ask the parts guy before you leave for a demonstration. Now, lets get it done. Cut the wire into 7 equal pieces. Using the wire taps connect one of the wires you cut to each of the 7 wires on the hitch harness. Tap on just before the plug. Now strip about 1/4 inch of the insulation from the free ends of the 7 pieces of wire you just installed. Connect the trailers ground wire to the cars frame to insure a proper ground. This is only a temporary ground untill you isolate the cars ground wire. Now, you will be using the trailers brown wire as a test light. You will be touching this wire, the brown wire from the trailer, to each of the free ends of the 7 wires you just installed to determine which wire supplies power to what set of lights. This is done by first turning on the cars parking lights. the parking lights only. Now touch each of the 7 installed wires to the brown one from the trailer one at a time. Which ever wire lights the trailers parking lights is the one you will connect to the brown wire when your all done testing. Now right down the color of the wire that will be connected to the brown wire later. Turn off the parking lights and put on the left turn signal. Now touch the brown wire to the remaining 6 wires one at a time until you have found the one that makes the trailers parking lights flash. This will be the one you connect to the trailers left turn signal. Repeat this step for the right turn signal. Now you have to find the ground wire from the car. Usually the ground wire is easy to trace. From the connector, trace each wire back and the one that is fastened to the car frame, or body, is the ground. If you can not find it this way you have to put on all lights that are possible in supplying power to the trailer connector. This will be the parking lights, emergency flashers, and the reverse lights. The reverse/backup lights will come on just by placing the car in reverse, key on, engine off, parking brake set for safety. Take the brown wire and test the remaining wires for power. Whichever wire that does not light your trailers parking light is the ground. Now you have isolated the four wires you need to operate your trailer. Hook them up to the trailer and retest the lights to ensure all is well. Fold over and tape up the three unused wires from the car. These may be useful if you get a trailer with a 7 wire connector in the future. I whish I could be there to help. Oh, if you mess up, the worst you can do is blow a fuse.
